6 Tips for Renting a Personal Watercraft (PWC)

Jet skiing is undoubtedly an exhilarating and adventurous way to explore our nation's waterways. If you're interested in exploring all this vessel has to offer before buying one — renting a personal watercraft (aka jet ski) is the way to go.

But of course, there are a few things you should know before renting a jet ski. Read on to uncover what those are!

What is a Personal Watercraft?

A personal watercraft (also called a jet ski) is a recreational vehicle designed to carry the rider on top — instead of inside — of it. They come in two styles: stand-up and sit-down designs, with the latter probably being what comes to mind when you think of a jet ski.

Tips for Renting a Jet Ski

Want to see if a jet ski is the vessel for you? Here's what you need to know before renting a PWC:

1. Review License and Age Requirements

Before renting a jet ski, you must check your area's license and age requirements. Certain places require a boating license and/or a specific age requirement to operate a jet ski.

2. Learn Safety Best Practices

Upon arriving at the rental facility, you'll likely receive a safety briefing. Pay attention, as the rental staff will explain how to operate the vessel, safety equipment, local guidelines, and more.

Jet skiing involves a certain level of risk, so you'll need to wear the proper safety equipment. The rental facility should provide you with a personal floatation device (PFD)—make sure it fits properly! You might also consider a wet suit, goggles, and/or water shoes.

3. Sign the Insurance and Rental Agreement

You'll have to sign a rental agreement before operating the jet ski. Generally, this agreement covers the terms and conditions of the rental, including insurance coverage, liability, and damages you would be responsible for. You might think about purchasing insurance coverage to protect yourself in case of an emergency.

4. Follow Local Rules and Regulations

You should also remember local rules and regulations when renting a jet ski. Many waterways impose restrictions like speed limits, no-wake zones, distance from other watercraft or swimmers, jumping or spinning restrictions, etc. Your rental team should cover them all during the safety briefing. Abiding by these rules ensures a safe and enjoyable ride for yourself and your fellow boaters.

5. Monitor Weather Conditions

Whether on a personal watercraft or a yacht, checking the weather conditions before hitting the water is necessary. Don't operate a jet ski if there are strong winds, heavy rain, or particularly rough waters.

6. Familiarize Yourself with the PWC

Jet skis come in all shapes and sizes – each with its own unique controls and features. Before hitting the waves, take some time to familiarize yourself with your specific jet ski. The rental staff will show you how to operate it – including how to start and stop the engine, control the throttle, navigate the PWC, and more.

Safety Precautions

As we mentioned, jet skiing assumes a certain level of risk! To make sure your experience is enjoyable, follow these safety precautions:

  • Go slow until you're away from shore. Then, accelerate gradually.
  • Wear the key around your wrist. This ensures it won't fall off during your ride.
  • Don't drink and drive. Boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal.
  • Don't speed! Most jet skis don't come with breaks, and excessive speeding is a common cause of collision. Note that jet skis can't turn without accelerating, which makes avoiding collisions incredibly difficult.

How Much Does Renting a Jet Ski Cost?

The exact cost of your jet ski rental depends on your location and the duration of your rental. Generally, renting a personal watercraft costs anywhere from $50 per person to $500 for a full day.

What to Wear While Jet Skiing?

A bathing suit and a properly fitting life jacket will do the trick. But if the water is chilly, consider a wetsuit.

Do You Need a License to Rent a Jet Ski?

As we mentioned, jet ski regulations vary depending on location. Some places require a personal watercraft license to operate a jet ski, while others require boaters to be above a certain age.

Is Driving a PWC Easy?

Yes! Jet skis are easy to operate and very fun. However, be sure to drive responsibly and follow the rules set forth by your rental company.
