Trachinotus carolinus

Distinguishing Markings:

Greenish gray on back, shading to silvery sides. Fish living in dark waters showing gold on throat, pelvic, and anal fins. Pompano have deep flattened bodies with a small mouth; no scutes; 22 to 27 soft dorsal rays; and 20 to 23 soft anal rays. The anal fin begins slightly behind the second dorsal.

Size:

Usually less than 3 pounds, rarely more than 6 pounds.

Distribution:

Found along shores in warm waters throughout the world, American Atlantic and Gulf coasts, West Indies

Habitat:

Inshore and nearshore waters, especially along sandy beaches, along oyster banks, and over grassbeds, often in turbid water. May be found in water as deep as 130 feet. Local movements are influenced by the tide, and seasonal movements are influenced by temperature.

Food Preference:

Feeds on mollusks and crustaceans, especially sand fleas

Spawning:

Appear to spawn offshore over an extended period of time. Peak spawning occurs during the spring and early summer.

Fishing Tips:

It is a strong fighter and an excellent light tackle game fish, taking small live or dead baits, as well as trolled lures, jigs and feathers. Also try casting, drifting, and still-fishing.
